GLOSSARY
These are the terms used across the technical writing on this site. Each definition is written to stand on its own.
- Fuel polishing
- Fuel polishing keeps stored diesel in a continuous maintenance cycle during long-term storage, so it stays at the specification it had when it left the refinery. A correctly designed system neutralises microorganisms, removes ferrous agents, separates free and emulsified water in stages, and removes solid particulates to at least 2 micron absolute.
- FMPS
- FMPS is Evergee’s own product designation, short for Fuel Maintenance and Purification System. It is the closed-loop equipment that keeps stored diesel conditioned, combining physical filtration, free and emulsified water separation, microbiological neutralisation and chemical conditioning in one architecture, with the results traceable and reportable.
- Emulsified water
- Emulsified water is water held in suspension within the diesel rather than settled at the bottom of the tank. Diesel is hygroscopic and continuously absorbs moisture from the air around it. Emulsified water degrades the fuel’s oxidation stability, raises its viscosity, and damages the injectors that spray fuel into the combustion chamber.
- Free water
- Free water is water that has separated out of the diesel and settled at the bottom of the tank. It creates the interface at which bacteria and fungi colonise, which is why a maintenance cycle has to separate both free and emulsified water rather than only the visible layer.
- Microbial contamination
- Because diesel is a fossil hydrocarbon it carries bacterial and fungal spores. Where water is present those organisms multiply and colonise at the fuel and water interface or along the tank wall, forming biological matter that clogs filters and injectors. Preventing it requires an organic neutralisation stage.
- TIER4 engines
- TIER4 is the generation of diesel engine whose injection systems work at tolerances of 2 to 4 micrometres and pressures up to 30,000 PSI. At those tolerances contamination that an older engine tolerated, running inefficiently but running, now damages injectors and prevents reliable operation under load.
Definitions of the standards themselves, ASTM D975, EN 590, ISO 4406, NFPA 110, TIA-942 and EN 50600, are not here yet. Stating what someone else’s standard requires is a job for an engineer who works to it.
