POWER OUTAGE AT HAMBURG AIRPORT

Flights were suspended at Hamburg Airport in Germany following a power outage. Authorities continue working to restore power.

It was reported that flights at Hamburg Airport in Germany were halted due to the power failure.

Hamburg Airport spokeswoman Stefanie Harder stated that the outage may have been caused by a short circuit, and that crews were working to fix the fault — though she could not say how long the repairs would take.

Harder noted that the airport had been evacuated as aircraft were unable to take off or land for safety reasons.

According to German media reports, flights bound for Hamburg were diverted to Hannover and Bremen airports.

Reports indicated that the outage first hit Terminal 2, with passengers redirected to Terminal 1 — but once Terminal 1 also lost power, the entire airport was evacuated.

Passengers took to social media to complain that the airport had not provided adequate information. They reported that no operations were possible, lights had gone out, and ventilation systems and escalators had stopped working.

Hamburg Airport is the country’s 5th largest airport, handling approximately 17 million passengers per year.
